Conservation Survey to Minton Tiles

,

The Eden tile team were contracted to survey and produce a Conservation Assessment Report of Internal Floor Tiles & Marble Flooring to the Nave, Chancel & Memorial Chapel of
St Mary’s Episcopal Church. The building stands inside the gates of Dalkeith Palace & Country Park. Built about 1843 – 1845, as the Buccleuch family’s private chapel, to a design of William Burn and David Bryce.

The interior, with Minton tile floors and superb stained-glass windows, is a reminder of the wealth and status of the Buccleuch family in the nineteenth century. The chapel was transferred to the congregation in 1958. The structure is category A listed.

The floor and tiles this report focusses on can be technically termed a Minton heraldic encaustic and geometric floor tile scheme to the nave and chancel. With an Italianesque Carrara and marble Nero marble pavement in the Buccleuch Memorial Chapel.
